Our first-ever and only release of Pinot Noir from our Mount Menzies terraced vineyard. Clones 114 and 115 on their own roots, began their life as cuttings in Lanny Martiniuk's nursery at Stone Boat Vineyards on the Black Sage Bench. They were planted on seven steep terraces on the rocky south flank of Mount Menzies on North Pender Island in the fall of 2002.
The first commercial crop in 2006 turned out to be a vintage for the ages, with warm, cloudless skies dominating the weather from April until September. The berry bunches were hand-selected in the vineyard. Morning Bay made just four barrels of our 2006 Pinot Noir as a red wine. This wine exhibits classic Burgundian character, with judicious alcohol levels (around 11%), silky, supple mouth-feel and crisp, food-friendly acidity.
